We’re only up to F and already I’m bone tired, a raveled sleave of care, frayed, run ragged, a giant stack of F&Gs to be trimmed and bound up by morning. Fold over the leaf of this old folio and fly me to the moon, where Futura reigns supreme.

There’s well-nigh nothing more soothing than folding rich cotton-rag paper along the grain with a well-worn folding bone.

F&G’s are the printed and folded signatures of a nearly-completed book,
needing only to be proofed, trimmed, and bound.

The term folio, from the Latin folium (leaf), has three interconnected but distinct meanings in the world of books and printing. It is firstly a term for a common method of arranging sheets of paper into book form, folding the sheet only once, and a term for a book made in this way. Secondly it is a general term for a sheet, leaf or page in (especially) manuscripts and old books, and thirdly an approximate term for the size of a book, and for a book of this size (wikipedia).

Futura was created by the German type designer Paul Renner for the German Bauer foundry in the 1920’s, inspired by the Bauhaus design philosophy. It was not modeled after an older type, and its form was to follow function. The large Futura family comprises one of the earliest sans serif type systems, and has grown over the years to include a complementary condensed family, a wide range of weights, and obliques.

In 1969, Futura became the first typeface on the moon,
the chosen face for the plaque that Neil Armstrong left there.

Stanley Kubrick favored Futura, which he used for all his films.  Now, fagged as I am, I leave you to ponder these F-words, while I close my eyes and fly me to the moon. (For the other words in the title, you’ll have to wait for another day.)

  2. Folding good paper with a folding bone sounds so peaceful.

  3. I think I still have a folding bone around somewhere. Using one is very soothing.
